Tourism, and specifically tourism in British Columbia's South Okanagan, has been a prime focus for Hollico Group over the years.

Tourism has been greatly impacted by the Internet. Today's visitor can literally shop online among destinations, accommodations and activities. Tourism marketing groups know this and have stepped up their online marketing and their marketing in the more traditional media. If your tourism business is going to try to attract more business, you need to have an effective online presence, you need to understand who your visitors are and what they expect and you need to market to them in a focused way.

In the past it was acceptable just to run a nice-looking print ad in the local visitors guide or on a tourist map. Little thought could be given to your target market and once the visitor had chosen a destination, based on whatever information they could get - usually a brochure mailed to them. This approach is an utter waste of time and money today. Today's tourist is much more sophisticated. They aren't likely to commit to a destination based on a few "feel good" impressions. They can very easily find out the pluses and minuses of any tourism business, be it a hotel, golf course or other attraction.

If you aren't speaking to your prospective visitor in terms they will understand and will find relevant to their needs, your marketing will go astray.

If you, for example, are advertising your accommodations as an "economy" or "budget" place to stay, while the market is looking for "upscale", you've lit a bomb. Yes, tourists today want a good deal, but they will probably shy away for accommodations that sound like they won't meet their expectations.
